Sleep is far away…..
Sleep is far away

Hesitating to come near…

Like a fresh beloved…

Sometimes she is closer, kissing my eyes..

But runs away giggling

When I invite her to bed…

She tells me she can perform in darkness..

But darkness disillusions me of her talents…

She becomes a mosquito and stings me…

I fidget in bed like a discontent mate

And swear and swear and swear….

And think….
Sleep and sex- both cheat men when they need it most….!

apples for a change?

Sadique. (21 05 2008.)

She was a mango once
But she sat near me and yawned
I saw worms in her mouth.

When I plucked it, it was delicious
When I made my first bite
It was tasty…
Soft and smooth

But I made a mistake once
I threw its seed away,
when the mango was finished.

Now I don’t like mangoes.
When I see apples in
Beautiful and colourful nets for display
I forget about mangoes…
I crave for the taste of apples.

But apples seem to evade me
When I stretch my hands
to get hold of a fleshy one…

Remember
All apples are mangoes
But all mangoes are not apples..

So, in some special seasons,
When she tries to be like an apple
I sharpen my knife
For making a nice cut.
End.

CHALLENGE LIFE; DON’T LET IT CHALLENGE
                                          YOU

‘Man is born free, but, alas, he is everywhere in chains’- Rousseau.

May be Rousseau said these words in a different situation and context. But this statement is absolutely ‘true regarding our students.’ They are chained by their parents, teachers, friends and society.  Every student has to face the following questions and find one’s own answers for them. If the answers are satisfactory for him, I am sure, he can free himself from all the bonds of his surroundings and undesirable influences.

What is the purpose of a humanbeing’s life?  Is it making money? Is it attaining social status? Is it becoming succesful in our own way? Or is it salvation?  Whatever it is, all these aims have an underlying purpose; that is satisfaction and peace of mind.  Whatever we do, whatever we think, what we seek everywhere is the ultimate, pure satisfaction with peace of mind. Then arises the next question, how can we search, find and experience satisfaction? My answer for the above question is very simple; living our life in our own way, believing and recognising that we are the masters of our own lives, deciding and executing  our plans for the attainment of  our own aims.

We have to feel the way through the darkness with  our own candle; don’t wait for others to light and hold it for us… but remember,  candles give us not only light, they give  us shadows also. Sometimes these shadows are darker, dangerous and challenging. But, definitely they can be cast away by a few balanced movements of the candle. Where most of us fail is in making these movements possible and skillful. We are afraid of newer shadows that may be created by our movements. Those who are not afraid to make the movements, plough the fields of better satisfaction and peace of mind. They are, in the ultimate analysis, called winners.

Problems are like the shadows mentioned earlier.  They are inevitable in the pursuit of success. But, like the shadows which can be cast away by changing the position of the candle, problems can be banished from our lives by our approach and modus operandi.

‘Adversity introduces a man to himself. The way you respond to situations you dislike reveals the depth of your character.’

Problems are adversity. They help us face life without apprehension and doubts. They prune and ripen us to bear fragrant flowers and sweet and tasty fruits. Let’s re read  Bacon’s famous quotation,                                                                                                                                                                                                                ‘Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, writing an exact man’ by rephrasing it a little in the light  of problems,  ‘problems make a full man, confrontation a ready man, solutions and exact man.’

Realise that problems are clouds that blur our vision. The brightness of sunshine can make them disappear in a few moments. It has been said that ‘some lessons are expensive, insulting and hurting. But they are worthy lessons.’ Some of the problems faced by us are expensive, insulting and hurting lessons. But, aren’t they worthy lessons?

What are the hurdles in facing the problems effectively?  There are so many. Do we have solutions? Sure. But, in my opinion, we have to face only one hurdle to overcome all the other hurdles. Do you know what that one is? It is the ATTITUDE OF MIND towards problems.

Bhartrihari’s words are relevant here,
‘Some people never begin anything, fearing failure; others begin but give up the moment a problem arises. The achievers are those who never give up whatever they have begun, regardless of the problems they encounter.’ The reason for this situation is, no doubt, the lack of the right attitude of the mind.

 Life challenges us with problems
Life challenges us with problems. It is one of the effective weapons of life to beat the will power of man.  If men do not fight it skillfully and tactfully he is lost forever.

Two types of problems
There are mainly two types of problems in our life. Problems created by our own minds and those caused by the external circumstances.

The only thing you have to fear is fear-Roosevelt.
‘Some days, for no perceptible reason, I feel scared, lonely and hopeless. After a good night’s sleep or a talk with someone who holds my hand and tells me to keep going, I am usually fine.’

We undergo various mental tensions and stress from time to time even in the absence of ostensible problems.
‘Stress, in simple terms, is like a fire- more precisely, embers, permanent embers. We can either control them to be harmless embers and enjoy their glow or fan them into huge fires. Not knowing better, many of us do the latter.’

In fact, our mind creates baseless problems and tensions to increase our productivity and energy. We have to know that our mind cannot reamain in the same state for ever. Its mood is static.  It has to change. It is universal truth. Those who are carried to a bad state of mind due to these changes in mood are those who do not realise the positive sides of the mind games.

We have to go along with the mind; not against them. We lose our balance when we fight  it without tactics.       Problems are there because mind needs them for keeping its balance. When we are tensed up, we have to tell  ourselves, ‘tension is a part of life, it cannot be avoided.’ Remember, ‘a little friction is needed to get traction.’  Why don’t we consider problems as ‘a little friction?’

John Kord Hagemann’s words are worth quoting here,
‘Why should we fight moods? Like the changing of lights in a theatre moods enable us to see and experience life in all its aspects.’

‘Circumstances are the wind and tide in the voyage of             life.’

The second category of problems is caused by the external circumstances.  The major external circumstances are people, situations or things. When we learn to control the above three factors, we see the problems disappearing by giving the absolute control of our life to ourselves.

How can we solve our day to day problems in life?  The first and best step is to approach the problem intellectually; not emotionally.  When problems arise, we are so blurred by the emotions that we forget to analyse them using our intelligence and wisdom. This makes our problems more complicated and confusing. No sooner we learn that we are trapped in the cobwebs of problems.  When we approach them with the help of our brain, we see each problem from every angle, find solutions with patience and overcome it.

A misty morning does not signify a cloudy day.

Problems are like the bush overgrown in a narrow forest track. We need some tools to clear them. The tools for clearing the problems are positive belief, approach, thought, indomitable will power, confidence, clear thinking, sufficient knowledge in the related matters and last but not the least,- the unfailing ability to control situations, men and matter.

A man who develops the above mentioned qualities through strong desire and auto suggestions (positive commands given by your conscious mind to the subconscious to influence and change it for positive results) embrace success. They make miracles happen. They attain self satisfaction and peace of mind
 Above all, they learn,
‘Tough time never lasts, but Tough people do.’

PLUMES(poem)     BY sadique. M.
Years are like feathers.
They fly away from you
In the wind of time…

We hear the song of life
Through experiences good and bad.
We hum the tune of life
With voice rough and smooth.

Past years are like birds in flight
We watch them move away..away
Like fading dots in a white paper.

Bygone days are like silver clouds
They please you
But never showers..

Days gone are like teachers
Who ask you questions out of syllabus?

Joy, sorrow, insult, diffidence, anger,
Indignation, worry, dissatisfaction
Your heart is laden
With pearls and holes.

You hear calls…
But
You can’t respond
Because the waves roar in your ears…
The waves of the disturbing present..!

MIRROR AND ME (poem)

When I was a small kid
 I had a mirror.
The mirror used to talk to me.
One day the mirror said,
‘’I don’t like you any more
I won’t reflect your face anymore.
I was sad..
Thus days passed
Months passed and years passed
I forgot the shape of my face
One day one of my friends came to my house
I asked him,  ‘can you describe my face for me?’
He began to describe it….
Your face is like a witch’s house
Your eyes are like two deep and dark wells
Where snakes and frogs live together
Your ears are labyrinths of hell
Your nostrils are caves leading to
The darkness of  your heart
Your mouth is …..

Stop, stop, enough of it.
My heart’s eye is better than your vision
It doesn’t tell lies but it hides the truths…

 Story.                                           The Flies
                                                       Sadique

“See, what is that?”
The fat lady asked.  Her name was Seraphin. She was so tired.  She was going to sit somewhere.  It was then she saw, above the smaller plants and bushes a big tree with almost round leaves and big thorny fruits.

‘’Should we go there and see?’’
The other lady, Ragini varma , asked. She was a  slim lady.  Both of them were hungry. They had been wandering through the forest for the last five hours….
‘’Whatever it is I am going to eat it. I have not eaten anything for the last six hours.’’
                                 X                          X                                X

The children had eaten everything.  They were faster and more skilled in finishing the food items they had kept in the bus to replenish themselves.  Only two children had shared what they had brought, some fruits.  It was Rahmath and Stephen. Besides it was a long journey.  So, when they had reached in a calm and quiet place they had told the driver to stop the bus for some rest and relaxation. It was a road along the border of a thick and vast forest.  The children had got down from the bus and sat in a meadow.
It was then Seraphin had the call of nature.
                                                                  ‘’Is there a toilet?’’

All of them laughed. What a foolish question. They were near a thick forest.
‘’Why do you need a toilet?  The forest is so vast ……..Can’t you adjust with it?’’  Ragini varma asked.

‘’Can you…can you give me company……..?’’Seraphin asked.

‘’give you what?’’  Ragini asked in the midst of others’ laughter.

‘’Please……I am a bit afraid to enter the forest.”

‘’you need not go that deeper…ok I will come with you and wait somewhere near.’’ Ragini agreed.  ‘’But don’t invite me for any further purpose.Ok?’’

Though she didn’t like the comment she didn’t say anything, because she wanted her help.  As the others watched both of them disappeared into the forest.  All these had happened almost five hours before…
                          G                         G                         G
They wandered through the forest to find the way back and got more confused.  It was then they saw the aforementioned tree with big fruits.
They ran towards it. When they reached near it they saw some monkeys eating them. They took some stones and drove the monkeys away.  Seraphin, though fat, could climb trees.  Within minutes she reached on an upper branch, plucked some big fruits and dropped them into the hands of  Ragini Varma.
Ragini Varma didn’t even wait for her friend.  The moment she got the fruits, she began to eat them as if she had never seen fruits before.

‘’wait…wait…keep one or two fruits for me.  I am also hungry.’’
Seraphin shouted from the top.  But it seemed that Ragini never heard her.  Seraphin soon understood that Ragini was a voracious eater.
‘’Give me atleast one of them…’’  Seraphin begged.

The children  and the others waited.  Their mobiles were out of range.  They had been waiting there for a long time.  They had no choice. They were afraid of being lost in the forest if they entered it.
‘’will they ever come back ?’’somebody asked.  They had lost their patience.  Nobody had time to wait for others in the long journey of life…

‘’Let’s go....’’  Someone else suggested.  ‘’why should we wait for them?  Who told them to go into the deep forest? ‘’

‘’May be they have seen something better there…should we waste our time? ‘’  It was Renuka.
But the driver of the bus was not ready to start up the bus.  So all of them waited and waited and waited……..

‘’ Oh, my God, see Renu, its juice is very sticky….whatever I do, no use. It has stuck in my clothes. See I am being surrounded by some flies.’’

‘’You are only surrounded by flies.. I think some of them have entered into my blouse …. Will you please help me?’’ Seraphin saw Renu fidgeting as if to escape the bite of the small insects that had entered into every nook and corner of her body.
            ‘’Oh God o god…oh I can’t stand it. Help me…help me..HELP MEEEE……..

They saw more flies coming..some of them entered their nostrils…
Some entered their ears and mouth.

‘’What should we do?’’  Ragini asked.  ‘’It was you who brought me to this mess.  Tell me …WHAT SHOULD I DO?’’

‘’See Ragini…. There is only one way left for the time being…RUN……..we will think about a solution later. Come…come with me….

They never expected that they could run with that much speed.  They had never run so in their lives.  The forest was so thick that they sometimes tumbled over the roots of trees.  It was almost evening. But the thick foliage prevented the  sunrays from entering the forest and made it a dome of darkness.
Suddenly, may be the work of a mischevious monkey, a vine fell from the top of a tree on Ragini. ‘’EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE’……SSSSNAKE….’’ She screamed.
‘’You …you, Seraphin, you brought me to this mess.’’ She added when her scream came to an end.
Somehow they had outrun the flies. But, still, some flies were inside their blouses, nostrils and mouths.
They were tired.  Very tired.  So they stopped running and started to walk.
‘’where are you going?  How come you two city ladies are deep inside the forest?
The voice came from behind a tree.  It was a profound voice.  Had they heard this voice before?  Yes? No?  No never…
‘’ Who are you? Sir…..   who ever you are, please help us sir.. we have been looking for a way out of this forest for the last seven or eight hours…we never found one.  Help us…”
‘’I will help you, but on one condition  once you reach your people ,you never enter this forest again…. Agreed?’’ the Voice asked.
‘’we are ready for any condition…take us out of this maze..’’ They pleaded in a very pathetic voice.
They never saw the owner of the voice.  They only heard the foot steps.  They followed it, driving away the flies from their body, with a  branch of a small plant..a bit afraid ……..

It was Ragini who saw a shining object through the gaps of the bush and leaves of plants…  She danced like a child and ran towards it.                                                           ‘’look….LOOK….our Bus. Where are the children?’’
The children were tired and asleep.  It was getting dark. The driver of the bus had made fire with some twigs and was sitting near it to get protection from the cold.  He was, despite the heat of the fire, shivering due to cold.  It was a surprise that Seraphin and Ragini had not felt cold even once….
They looked around for the person who had brought them to the road. Unfortunately, they saw none, but they heard the voice again,
‘’remember what I told you.  Never enter this sacred place again for any reason.  This is not a place to discharge your waste..’’
They heard again foot steps on the withered leaves.  They didn’t want to know who it was.  Both of them never gave any importance to such things.
It seemed that Ragini had something in her mind.  Straight away she entered the bus , caught two children and began to squeeze their ears.
‘’You guys…you gave her those fruits..that is why she had some indigestion problem.  That is why we had to enter the forest, that is why we had to eat those juicy fruits, that’s why we are surrounded and disturbed by these flies..’’
She babbled as she squeezed their ears.
The children did not understand anything. They wriggled due to extreme pain.  They had done only one mistake.  They had shared the fruits they had brought from home.  Their parents had given them those fruits.  Was it a mistake that they had distributed it among others? Many others had eaten it.  Nobody had any problem with it.  Why Seraphin?  Why not others they thought as they tried to escape the ‘punishment’ of their madam.
Then the children saw them.  They were coming out of the nostrils, mouths and blouses of Seraphin and Ragini…THE FLIES…… The flies were fast conquering the bus.  The children were panicked.  They ran here and there to escape the onslaught of the flies.  But how much could they run inside a bus.  The doors were locked.  The driver was long asleep near the fire.  Many screamed. Many could not even make a sound, because flies had reached their lungs.
When they looked around, to see whether Seraphin and Ragini were there, they knew that they had already disappeared…..
ONLY THE SCREAMS OF THE CHILDREN FILLED THE NIGHT AIR…..                                                                                    end.

lizards and flies

i saw a lizard
focussing on a fly
i asked the fly
'why don't you fly away?'

'how can I fly away?'
it is my fate to be eaten.
i don't care who gulps me'

the lizard did not like my question..
i saw it looking at me.
then slowly it came to me
and whispered in my ears.
"i will give you a share.
please don't disturb us..'

As i ate a tasty part of the fly
i thought,
i must not have disturbed the lizard..
he was doing his duty, wasn't he?'

or why should we. the lizards, interfere in
other lizards' affairs....?

why didn't i understand
the universal law?
LIZARDS EAT AND FLIES ARE EATEN.'
